We had a bit of a nightmare yesterday.
In order to get the floor tiled we had moved the cooker and washing machine into the conservatory out of the way. Obviously we needed to do some washing over the weekend so we moved the washing machine back into the kitchen and I plumbed it in.
The only problem was that the pipe for the hot water feed was at full stretch and it was hard work to tighten up both the hot and cold water feeds.
After about 5 minutes I noticed a very small puddle of water at the back of the washing maching. This wouldn’t have been too bad to keep mopping up with kitchen roll but Michelle wasn’t happy.
It seems that there was a small drip coming from the hot water connection. I tried to tighten it up some more but in order to do this I had to pull the washer out a little bit so that I could get my hand down the back. This turned out not to be a good idea as the already tight hot water connection got dislodged a little more and there was now a thin jet of water coming out of the connection.
We decided at this point to turn everything off. Michelle had the bright idea of moving the washer to in front of the sink and plumbing it in from the front rather than round the back of the units as this would mean that there was plenty of slack.
I expected a little bit of water to still be in the hot and cold water feeds and was ready for when I disconnected these. However I had not anticipated that the waste water pipe would have water in and that by turning the washing machine off that the all the water in it would flow out of the waste pipe.
This resulted in the floor underneath the sink and dishwasher getting flooded.
After a mild heart attack and some frantic mopping up I managed to get all the water mopped up. I then got the washing machine hooked up and we were able to wash our clothes without any further mishaps.
The kitchen floor is being tiled as we speak. It should all be finished tomorrow which of course means more pics.
The good news is this brings us one step closer to completing the kitchen. The only jobs left now are to fit the new radiator, drill holes for and wire in the downlights, fit the skirting board and paint the woodwork.
With any luck my dad will be coming over on Saturday to fit the rad and drill the holes for the lights.
As I stated in my last post things with the kitchen are beginning to draw to close which means I can now focus on the bedroom/nursery. Obviously it is crucial that I get this room finished before the baby arrives.
Jobs to do include finish stripping the wallpaper from the ceiling. The walls are already stripped. Clean up the brickwork exposed from removing the chimney breast ready for plastering. Remove the existing skirting boards as it will need replacing. The same goes for the cornicing. Put up plasterboard to patch up the hole in the ceiling made by removing the chimney breast. Chisel out holes for two new double plug sockets and fit the backboxes. Chisel out hole for double network socket and wire it in. Sort out the uneven floor by replacing existing pieces of plyboard that were put in for ease of access and to replace parts of the floorboards with 20mm thick plyboard that is the same thickness as the existing floorboards. Remove and dispose of existing radiator and plumb in new one.
I think that’s about it but I’m sure there will be a couple of other little jobs that I have overlooked.
When I get chance I will take some pictures showing the current state and the room and also what the kitchen looks like when the floor is tiled.
We had a bit a break after the kitchen had been fitted to take stock of what still needed to be done and where we were headed with things next.
Hopefully the floor will be tiled this week and the outstanding issues will be resolved on Wednesday.
I have replaced all the plug sockets with nice stainless steel ones and it looks a lot better although I have not yet screwed them to the wall. The screws I had were not long enough and the replacement ones I ordered were too long and need cutting down.
My dad is popping up on Sunday to fit the new radiator and waste disposal unit.
That just leaves the skirting boards and the downlights.
We have arranged for an electrician to come and give a quote for fitting them as long as we get the holes cut (also on my dad’s to do list for Sunday).
In case any of you want to see what the kitchen looked like before this marathon began I have found some pics of the old kitchen so here they are.

As you can see from the pics in the last post there is still a bit of work to do.
Also there are a couple of outstanding issues from the fitting of the kitchen
We are missing one 300mm door
We are missing the cutlery tray insert for one of the drawers
One of the shelves is damaged and needs replacing
The fitter made a list of these issues and will raise it with the appropriate person.
Apologies I know I promised in progress pics last night but Michelle overruled me.
Well the fitters have now left so that can mean only one thing – the kitchen is now fitted – woo hoo
For all those of you dying to see what it looks like here are some pics.

Woo hoo !!!
The kitchen is currently being fitted as we speak. It’s going great and is looking good. I will take some progress pictures tonight so you can see how it is going. It will all be finished (bar the tiling, skirting and radiator being fitted) by the end of play tomorrow.
The kitchen company have been able to make our new kitchen a little earlier than they expected. This means that it is now getting fitted this Monday.
The only thing left to do before it is fitted is to get the room painted which will do this weekend.
I now have a hit counter to tell me how many people have visited my website.
It also records site stats so I can view detailed stats for all my visitors.
